Roger Goodell Nephew: Breaking News – Criticism of NFL, Penalty!
Roger Goodell Nephew: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell backed NFL officials at the league’s winter meetings in Dallas when questioned about the now infamous offsides penalty on Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney.
I find it ironic that I’m answering a question about the officials getting it right and they’re being criticized,” Goodell said Wednesday.
The controversial play occurred late in the fourth quarter of Kansas City’s 20-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Toney appeared to line up offsides and did not speak to the lines official to ensure he was in the correct position before snapping the ball. Then tight end Travis Kelce caught Patrick Mahomes’ deep pass. Kelsey took a few steps with the ball and then threw a sideways pass to an open Toney, who raced toward the end zone.
The touchdown, however, was negated by an offsides penalty called on Toney.
Both head coach Andy Reid and Mahomes were initially upset by the flag. Reid called the penalty decision “embarrassing” and Mahomes was shown screaming on the sideline. However, after the emotions of the game died down and they reviewed the game tape, both Reid and Mahomes admitted that Toney was offside.

Make sure you check with the person on the side to see if you are consistent. He’s not intentionally lining up the offsides,” Reid said this week. As you know was two inches away from being legal or say 1 inch so you can always – like I said, you can argue both sides for both teams. There were things that happened where people – that’s how it goes. ”
Mahomes said Wednesday that the team has moved on.
I think once the game was over, and you went to sleep and came back on Monday and Tuesday, I think everybody’s mind was in the right place,” Mahomes said. “In this league, you must get past that stuff.
